What is PowerToGo?
PowerToGo is a portable operating environment that enables you to install and run standard Microsoft® Windows® applications from your Lexar JumpDrive.

How do I get PowerToGo?
There are two ways to get PowerToGo:
  1. PowerToGo software comes installed on speed-rated JumpDrives (example: JumpDrive Lightning). Lexar recommends using JumpDrive Lightning because of its very fast performance.

  2. Download the trial version from the Lexar website. The trial version will install on any Lexar JumpDrive USB flash drive and may be purchased at the conclusion of the trial period for $29.95.
How do I install PowerToGo?
An installation guide for the PowerToGo trial can be found here.

What are the system requirements for PowerToGo?
PowerToGo works on the majority of PCs with Windows XP and Windows 2000 (SP4). You will need a USB port (USB2.0 recommended for speed). PowerToGo does not currently work with Microsoft XP Tablet PC.

Does it work on the Mac?
In one word, no. PowerToGo is a Windows application that enables you to carry other Windows applications portably. It does not translate applications but instead facilitates their running from a portable drive. Note: A JumpDrive USB flash drive configured with PowerToGo may be used as simple storage while plugged into a Macintosh system, but the PowerToGo software will not run.

How do I install additional applications?
There are two types of additional applications:
  • Pre-approved
  • Non-pre-approved
Pre-approved: PowerToGo makes it easy for you to successfully install many applications. We have verified the installation procedures of over 100 programs and have dramatically simplified the installation procedure down to just a few clicks of the mouse. These are categorized as pre-approved applications.

Here's how it works: Simply click on 'Add Programs' from the quick launch menu and you will find a growing list of over 100 standard Windows applications. Note: This is a dynamic list of applications that is kept on our web sever. Internet connection is required to view this list and install applications.

From the left column of the Programs Directory, choose the category of application that you would like to install. Next, choose the program you want and click the green button.

That's it. PowerToGo makes it easy to install many of your favorite Windows applications.

Non-pre-approved:
We expect that our pre-approved programs list will provide all the functionality required by the majority of our customers. For those who wish to install programs that are not on the pre-approved list, InstallAnythingTM, a platform add-on technology, is available for download as a trial and for purchase. Using InstallAnything, you can install many standard Windows application that do not appear on the pre-approved list.

What is InstallAnything?
InstallAnything is a PowerToGo platform add-on that enables you to install many standard Windows applications that are not on the pre-approved list and make them portable. Note: not all programs can be successfully installed with InstallAnything.

The InstallAnything Installation Wizard was created to make installing non-approved applications easier and allow additional compatibly and flexibility. Look for the InstallAnything Installation Wizard in the Add-Programs Menu. InstallAnything is available as a trial or for purchase.

How can I make PowerToGo faster?
There are a few different ways to optimize your PowerToGo experience.

Formatting: For drives with a stated capacity of 2GB and under, format your drive as FAT16 (or FAT). Tests show that PowerToGo runs up to 20% faster on FAT16. Windows will default to FAT32, but FAT16 is faster. Note: Windows refers to FAT16 as FAT.

Drive speed: Now that you are installing and running applications on your JumpDrive, drive speed becomes more noticeable than ever. JumpDrive Lightning features a dual-channel controller and SLC high-speed flash. The 4GB model can reach sustained write speeds of 22MB/s. If you are running PowerToGo from a standard Lexar Jump Drive, upgrading to a speed-rated JumpDrive Lightning will increase performance. Not only are they fast, but they come with a licensed version of PowerToGo at no extra cost.

Can I install Microsoft Outlook?
Outlook is a very popular application that organizes your contacts, calendars, and email. It is the de facto standard for much of corporate America but it isn't really a portable application. We are currently working on a platform add-on that will enable you to install and run Outlook portably. This platform add-on is not part of standard PowerToGo software and will be offered at a later date, at an additional price.

Getting Started
I installed PowerToGo, now what?
Here are a few activities to get you started:
  1. Change the user icon or avatar
  2. Take your Internet Explorer favorites with you
  3. Install an application

Changing your user icon: By default, PowerToGo shows an icon of the space shuttle, which symbolizes the power and portability of PowerToGo software. You can replace it with something to personalize your PowerToGo by right-clicking on the image and changing it to something more to your liking. Of course, if you like the space shuttle, or happen to be an astronaut, then feel free to leave it.

Taking your Internet Explorer favorites with you: This is a very cool feature of your PowerToGo software. Now, no matter where you go, you will have your Internet Explorer favorites list with you.

To do this, click on 'Options' from the PowerToGo Easy-Access Menu. Next choose 'Advanced' and then copy.

In a few moments, it will copy your favorites from the host computer onto you drive. Next time you use Internet Explorer from your PowerToGo drive on another computer, your favorites list will be there ready for you to use - just like you were at the computer you are working on now.

Installing Applications
See "How do I install Applications?" above.

How do I restore PowerToGo?
Restoring your PowerToGo software is easy. If you made a backup to a trusted PC, just copy it back to the drive and you will be back in business.

What if you don't have a backup?
Regardless of the version (trial or full), the remedy is the same: simply load the trial version of the software on your Lexar JumpDrive USB flash drive. If you had the 60-day trial, you can restore and continue using PowerToGo. If you purchased JumpDrive Lightning and accidentally deleted the software, the trial will get you going again with the full version.

Licensed versions
If you purchased a license for the trial version or InstallAnything, the licensed file that you received can still be imported, so save those emails. The license files are specific to your Lexar JumpDrive USB flash drive and will work for the life of the product.

How do I remove PowerToGo?
If you decide to discontinue using PowerToGo, removing the software is as simple as deleting the following files from your drive:

If you don't have any data on your drive that you wish to keep, the fastest way to clear your drive may be to format it. If your drive has a stated capacity of less than 4GB, it is suggested that you format it to FAT16 instead of the Windows default of FAT32.

If you prefer not to format your drive, there is another way. Have PowerToGo remove itself. To do this, click 'Uninstall' upon startup and the software will remove itself from your Lexar JumpDrive USB flash drive.
