Mass Storage Compatibility FAQs

Q: What does USB Mass Storage Compliance mean?
A: Modern operating systems include common USB drivers for various devices so customers no longer need to install drivers. This eliminates conflicts, crashes and driver CD-ROMS that have been common in the past. Lexar has made a commitment to making all new reader products mass storage compliant to eliminate the difficulty of drivers for the consumer.

Q: What Lexar readers are Mass Storage Compliant?
A:

All of the latest USB single function readers are mass storage compliant. Reader compatibility is noted on the box. No drivers are required for these products as they use mass storage class drivers that are part of the operating system. The following are the earliest revisions of readers that are Mass Storage Compliant:
   USB SmartMedia Reader, Rev D
   USB CompactFlash Reader, Rev A
   USB MMC/SC Reader, Rev A
USB Memory Stick Reader, Rev B

Q: Why are there different revisions of Readers?
A: Lexar continues to improve our products to provide the best experience for the consumer. As we change products, we change the revision number found on the back label. This way, our technical support can better serve you with any questions you may have about the product. We are also able to identify the correct driver in the event your reader requires one.

Q: What Operating Systems provide Mass Storage Compliance for USB?
A:

The following operating systems are USB Mass Storage Compliant:
   Windows Me
   Windows 2000
   Windows XP
   Mac OS 8.6*
Mac OS 9 Mac OS X

* Note: Mac OS 8.6 requires software update

Q: I have Mac OS 8.6. How do I upgrade to computer software to have USB Mass Storage Compliance?
A: You must download the drivers from Apple computer. Download the USB Mass Storage Support 1.3.5 from the Apple Software Updates web site http://www.apple.com/support. You will need to use the search function to obtain the correct driver. The file is approximately 1.5 MB. The update is included in Mac OS 9 and above.

Q: I have Mac OS 8.6. How do I know if I have USB Mass Storage Compliance?
A: In Extensions manager, look for the following Extensions:
   USB Mass Storage Extension 1.3.5
   USB Mass Storage Support 1.3.5
If these extensions are installed on your computer, you do not need a separate driver for any mass storage compliant reader.
