Professional photographer Larry Crandall graduated from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA in 1983, with a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Commercial Photography. For over twenty years, Crandall has taken his love of photography and ventured into many different segments of the industry, including commercial photography, interior and exterior architectural photography, advertising, portraiture, and most recently, wedding photography and even publishing. In fact, now, Crandall shoots weddings exclusively, using his own unique style molded from over twenty years as a professional. Crandall has also given multiple seminars to professional wedding and fine art photographers, always extolling the virtues of utilizing cutting edge technology and applying them to professional photography.
Recently, Crandall visited Golden Gate Park in San Francisco to search for even more unique images for his camera. In this image, Crandall is sitting in a tree, about 12 feet off the ground. He is focusing on the sunlight coming in through the branches, and as expected, he is trying to get that unique perspective that most photographers would not think to find.
Crandall used his Canon EOS-5D, and due to the many layers provided by the summer foliage, and because of the countless curves and angles provided by the branches, he utilized a 14mm lens to extract as much detail as possible. In order to get the maximum sharpness, while at the same time countering the gentle swaying of the branches, he shot with a 1/32 of a second shutter speed.
"The light filtering through the leaves and branches gave me the perfect opportunity to climb up and see what sort of image I could capture," exclaims Crandall. "Couple those lighting conditions along with the extreme angle and height of the shot, and I knew the branches reaching for the light was the perspective I was seeking."
Larry Crandall's approach to photography is to strive to be different and capture images that can serve as memories. "I try to make my images as timeless as possible," Crandall states. "I look for a unique point-of-view, a special perspective, a different way to see a moment and I capture it. I find that experimenting with camera angles, lighting and different lenses yields the distinctive results that I am looking for." Crandall's philosophy for finding the right photographs is right in-line with his success as a wedding photographer. A couple's wedding day is the most important and magical day of their lives, and Crandall's knack for finding that special moment or extraordinary memory and transforming it to a timeless image is a big part of his success.
In addition to his diverse background in professional photography, Larry Crandall was also one of the first professionals to switch from traditional film to digital imaging. Since he switched over to digital, Crandall has used Lexar Professional Series CompactFlash cards and Lexar Professional CompactFlash card readers.
"I use Lexar cards exclusively and nothing else. I use a few 4GB 133X CompactFlash cards and Lexar's Pro card readers, and I find that they have always stood up to the various requirements of the different types of photography that I engage in," says Crandall. "With Lexar's high-speed, large capacity, overall high-performance CF cards, I never have to worry about losing images or running out of space. When used in tandem with my Lexar card readers, my digital workflow is greatly improved, allowing me to experiment further and shoot longer," he added.
On top of using Lexar Professional CF cards and card readers, Crandall has also made use of Image Rescue, Lexar's award-winning image recovery software. He explains, "I accidentally formatted an entire card, which was filled with pictures of my family from Christmas week. By using Image Rescue, I was able to get all of my shots back. I was thrilled that I did - but I think my wife was even more excited than me!"
